25 individuals were recorded during the nationwide WBH population survey, 2019. The survey engaged 21 Forest Resource Group (FRG), 11 Local Conservation Support Group (LCSG) and 10 staff of RSPN for five continuous days from March 2 till 6, 2019. 30 known and potential habitats of WBH within Punakha, Wangdue, Tsirang, Dagana, Sarpang, Zhemgang, Mongar and Pema Gatshel districts were surveyed. RSPN along with BTO observed the zero waste hour by cleaning the office surrounding. RSPN conducted its 21st cleaning campaign of Chubachu Stream and collected 139 kgs of waste. It has been a challenging task to maintain the stream despite our monthly cleaning campaign.

In Kisonachhu this year, the first juvenile was reported to have fledged on June 17, 2019, after 73 days, but did not return to the nest for the next three days. However, it returned to the nest after 5 days on June 23. Normally, the juveniles fledge by 72-73 days (Pradhan, R. 2011). A single White-bellied Heron (WBH) was sighted flying over a bridge at Tharong village (Upper Kheng / Shingkhar Bridge) on July 24, 2019, at around 03:36 PM by Sherab Jamtsho and Sangay Choda, Forest Rangers from Nimshong Forest Beat, Khomshar Range under Zhemgang Division. The WBH was sighted during a regular patrolling towards Chamkhar chhu area and is the first sighting in that area.

On August 18, 2019 21 RSPN members trekked the Sagala Trail, a historic 7-hour hike from Haa to Paro. Joining the rest of the nation, RSPN together with Bhutan Toilet Organization, Rotary Club and Centre for Environment and Development observed the day to mark the Zero Waste Hour. The members collected various types of waste, stagnant water drained out, swampy and lush green weeds were cleared in our office premises, which was then followed by Chubachu stream cleaning. We wouldn’t have been able to accomplish this without the joint effort of our partners.
White-bellied Heron recorded for the first time in Thimphu.Sighted at 2230, this is the highest recorded elevation. Sherab Gyeltshen, an ardent birder spotted the heron at 1:40 pm at Olakha and called in his friend Tshulthrim, a birding guide, who confirmed that it was indeed a White-bellied Heron. Hishey Tshering, a travel agent and a birder claimed to have spotted the bird around the same area at 8 am but could not confirm it as he did not have his birding equipment with him at that time. Two White-bellied Herons (WBH) were sighted at Dagachhu Hydro Power dam site on October 22, 2019, at around 10:32:01 AM when a team comprising of officials from Dagana Forest Division and Dagachhu Hydro Power Corporation (DHPC) visited the dam site at Gewthang under Kana Gewog for inspection of sand deposit in the dam area. However, the team couldn’t take the picture as the birds shied away or flew away to inaccessible areas.
