Waste and Pollution

Introduction

Waste disposal is becoming a serious problem for countries all around the world. Despite its tiny population, Bhutan’s economic growth has led to increasing urbanization and problems associated with waste, which threaten the beauty of one of the most pristine environments in the world. The main challenges in waste management in urban areas in Bhutan (including Thimphu) are illegal dumping of waste (although waste collection services are available) and a lack of cooperation in segregation and disposal of waste.

More problematically, the composition of that waste is shifting from biodegradable to non-biodegradable. One of the employees of Clean Bhutan said that, compared to other countries, waste in Bhutan is not a huge problem. However, it is growing rapidly, and it has been noticed that the waste produced by individual households since 2014 has doubled from 250 grams a day per person to almost half a kilogram per person now.
