Officials from the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature (RSPN) and the Department of Forests and Park Services (DoFPS), Bhutan, held a productive meeting today with representatives from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Asia Regional Office in Thailand.
The discussion focused on identifying areas of mutual collaboration and exploring opportunities to strengthen conservation efforts among the organizations.
RSPN became a member of the IUCN in 2007, expanding its international engagement, and at that time was the only Bhutanese member organization (RSPN Rangzhin Newsletter, 2007–2008).

The Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) in collaboration with the Department of Forests and Park Services of Bhutan, the Natural History Museum and BOKU University of Austria, and Max Planck Institute of Germany hosted a joint symposium on the project,’𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗵𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝟭𝟱 (𝗘𝗣𝗶𝗖)’.
The 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 was aimed mainly in sharing some of the key achievements and experiences from the ongoing project. This project investigates the complex relationship between forest management, avian biodiversity, and wildlife health in Bhutan, with a particular focus on the prevalence of avian malaria in the bird community of the habitat of the critically endangered White-bellied Heron. The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 15, aiming to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, combat deforestation, and halt land degradation and biodiversity loss.
The symposium was held in Vienna, Austria and attended by officials from Friends of Bhutan in Austria, Natural History Museum of Vienna, BOKU University, and interested participants.

The Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) had the honor of hosting a four-day official visit by a delegation from the Adaptation Fund(AF) Secretariat from January 21 to 24, 2026. The purpose of the mission was to assess RSPN’s ongoing accreditation process with the Adaptation Fund, a critical step toward securing support for climate adaptation projects in Bhutan.
During the visit, the AF delegation engaged in productive meetings with RSPN staff and the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the Designated Authority for the Adaptation Fund. The delegation also visited several RSPN project sites in Punakha, Wangdue, and Tsirang districts to gain firsthand insight into RSPN’s ongoing environmental and community-based initiatives.
This mission marks a significant milestone in RSPN’s efforts to strengthen its capacity for climate resilience and sustainable development. Partnership with the Adaptation Fund will further enhance RSPN’s ability to implement impactful adaptation projects across Bhutan’s diverse ecosystems.
