Sixteenth Conference of Parties in Cancun, Mexico

The sixteenth UN Climate Change Conference in Cancun opened on Monday, 29 November 2010 with a welcoming ceremony and opening remarks by the UNFCCC Executive Secretary Ms. Christiana Figueres, Mexican President Felipe Calderón, IPCC Chairman Dr. Rajendra Pachuri and other dignitaries.

The opening plenary of the Conference of the Parties (COP) also took place right after the welcoming ceremony followed by afternoon session on opening plenaries of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP), the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the UNFCCC (AWG-LCA) and the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments by Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP). The AWG-LCA contact group convened in the evening on preparation of outcome for COP 16 and the AWG-KP contact group of Annex I on further commitments.
The conference is attended by thousands of delegates from 194 nations and will end on December 10, 2010.
